Self-awareness is the ability to pay attention to yourself and how your behavior, feelings, and emotions correspond to your internal expectations. You can objectively evaluate yourself, control your feelings, align your actions with your beliefs, and accurately grasp how others view you if you are highly self-aware.


Essentially, it is a psychological state in which oneself becomes the focus of attention.


Although self-awareness is an essential aspect of who you are, it is not something you are acutely conscious of at all times of the day. Self-awareness becomes integrated into the structure of who you are, emerging at various times depending on the situation and personality.


According to research, self-awareness is a significant factor in how we think, feel, behave, and respond to our thoughts, emotions, and behavior.


Self-awareness is crucial to our understanding of ourselves and our relationships with others and the universe. You can examine yourself in relation to others if you are self-aware.


The Importance of Being Self-Aware

According to research, when we see ourselves clearly, we become more optimistic and innovative. We make better decisions, form stronger bonds, and interact more effectively as a result. We're less likely to cheat, steal, or lie. We are more productive employees who receive more promotions. We're more successful leaders, with happier workers and more prosperous businesses when we are self-aware.


Self-awareness is a reasonably uncommon attribute, even though most people think they are. Just ten to fifteen percent of people are self-aware, according to estimates.


As you might imagine, there are many benefits to practicing self-awareness:

  • It has the potential to make us more proactive, embrace ourselves more fully, and inspire positive self-development (Sutton, 2016).

  • Self-awareness enables us to see things from other people's perspectives, to exercise self-control, to work creatively and productively, and to feel pride in ourselves and our work, as well as general self-esteem (Silvia & O'Brien, 2004).

  • It leads to more informed decisions (Ridley, Schutz, Glanz, & Weinstein, 1992).

  • It has the potential to improve our job performance, make us better communicators at work, and boost our self-confidence and job-related well-being (Sutton, Williams, & Allinson, 2015).


There are compelling reasons to focus on increasing self-awareness, but this list is far from complete. It's a tool and a technique that can be used anywhere to ground yourself at the moment, realistically assess yourself and the situation, and help you make positive decisions. Self-awareness has the power to improve almost any experience you have.


The Skill of Developing Self-Awareness

With the right exercises and routines, everyone can learn to develop their self-awareness.

You will shift your thoughts and interpretations in your mind as your self-knowledge grows. Changing your mental arrangements helps you to alter your feelings. One of the characteristics of Emotional Intelligence is self-awareness, which is an essential factor in achieving success.


Self-awareness is the first step toward manifesting your desires and taking control of your life. Your feelings, reactions, personality, and behavior all play a role in determining where you go in life. You will see where your thoughts and feelings are leading you if you have self-knowledge. It also enables you to gain control of your emotions, actions, and personality, allowing you to make the desired improvements without your ego getting in the way. You would have trouble making adjustments in the course of your life unless you are conscious of your feelings, emotions, words, and actions in the present moment.


The following are some suggestions to become more self-aware.


Practice Mindfulness and Meditation

Rather than getting lost in thought, ruminating, or daydreaming, mindfulness refers to being present in the moment and paying attention to yourself and your surroundings.


Meditation is the practice of concentrating your mind on one thing, such as your breath, a mantra, or a sensation and letting go of your thoughts.


Both of these techniques will assist you in becoming more mindful of your internal state and responses to situations. They will also help you in identifying your thoughts and emotions and preventing you from being so engrossed in them that you lose sight of your "self."


Become Aware of Your Emotions

Gaining a better understanding of your feelings is the first step toward practicing self-awareness.


We've been taught to ignore our emotions and focus solely on our logical thinking when making decisions.


This, I believe, throws our decision-making process off-kilter. We also make choices and try to live up to someone else's ideals when relying solely on our logical thinking.


We need both logical thinking and our emotions to make good decisions. We must pay heed to both our gut and our brain.


Include your emotions in your decisions to increase your consciousness of them. Listen to your gut instincts and consider why one of your logical thoughts may disagree with your feelings.

"Where did that feeling come from?" you may wonder. Make it a habit to acknowledge your emotions.


Track Your Feelings

Making a practice of monitoring your emotions is the second step in practicing self-awareness.

Begin writing down the most optimistic and pessimistic thoughts. Keeping a journal or a note on your phone is a good idea. For at least 30 days, give it a shot.


Make a conscious effort to note patterns and trends. This simple exercise will assist you in better defining your mission, beliefs, motivations, and everything else that is preventing you from doing the work you've always wanted to do.


Monitoring your feelings is what I like to think of as interacting with your subconscious mind. It's your inner self speaking. It frequently knows what you want in life before you can articulate it.


Journal Your Thoughts and Self Talk

Journaling gives you the advantage of allowing you to recognize, explain, and acknowledge your thoughts and feelings. It assists you in determining what you want and what works best for you. It can also help you determine what you don't want, what you don't value, and what doesn't fit for you.


You will become more conscious and intentional by writing down your thoughts and self-talk.

A daily journaling practice will help you understand how the mind thinks.


You begin to understand a powerful concept when you practice watching and analyzing your thoughts without clinging to them or ruminating on them.


Monitor Other Areas of Your Life

The third step in developing self-awareness is to broaden your practice to include aspects of your life other than emotions and thoughts.


There are various dimensions of your life that you can monitor, but you should concentrate on those you feel will most impact creating your ideal lifestyle.


Simply put, self-awareness is the ability to observe oneself—to note and pay attention to trends in one's thoughts, emotions, and actions. And it's a talent that we all possess.


Some of us may have more or less of it to begin with, but there are various simple activities that anyone can use to develop their self-awareness, regardless of where they are now.
